Nigeria’s Super Eagles opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Friday.
Madagascar took a surprise lead in the 16th minute when E. Kari converted R. Ponti’s assist to silence the home supporters.
The Super Eagles responded before the break, with debutant George Ilenikhena restoring parity after combining with Alex Iwobi to complete a well-worked move.
Nigeria continued to push for the winner after the restart and were rewarded when another debutant, Moses Usor, found the net to put Eric Chelle’s side ahead.
The Super Eagles protected their advantage until the final whistle to begin their Group L campaign with three points.
Nigeria’s victory is important because Tanzania, one of the co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON, already have an automatic place at the tournament.
As a result, only the top-ranked team among Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will secure the group’s remaining qualification ticket.
The Super Eagles will face Guinea-Bissau in their next Group L fixture on Tuesday, while Madagascar will take on Tanzania.
Nigeria were without striker Victor Osimhen, who missed the opening two qualifiers as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury.
