Portugal edge Wales in Nations League opener

Portugal began their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Wales in Lisbon on Thursday, with João Félix scoring the only goal of the game.

The hosts dominated possession and created most of the opportunities, registering 22 attempts compared with Wales’ five at the Estádio José Alvalade.

Félix broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when his 20-yard effort took a deflection off Wales defender Ben Davies before beating goalkeeper Danny Ward.

Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating outing as Portugal captain, missing several chances to extend his record international goals tally.

The 41-year-old also had a second-half goal ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Ronaldo came close after Rúben Neves created an opportunity from four yards, but the veteran forward lifted his effort over the crossbar.

He later found the net after racing onto a Bruno Fernandes pass, only for the goal to be disallowed after VAR confirmed he had strayed offside.

Wales threatened to snatch an equaliser late on when Brennan Johnson’s effort from the byline struck the crossbar, before Rúben Dias produced a crucial clearance to prevent Lewis Koumas from converting the rebound.

The victory marked a winning start for Portugal under 72-year-old Jorge Jesus, who became the oldest coach to take charge of the country’s national team.
