Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi reached 930 career goals on Sunday after scoring a stunning free-kick in his side’s 2-2 draw with San Diego FC in Major League Soccer.
San Diego opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Anders Dreyer latched onto Jeppe Tverskov’s pass before lifting the ball over Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Messi restored parity 12 minutes later after he was brought down just outside the box.
The Argentine stepped up to take the resulting free-kick and curled his effort over the wall, with the ball hitting the post before crossing the line.
The goal was Messi’s 20th in the MLS this season and the 75th direct free-kick goal of his career.
It also took his tally for Inter Miami to 101 goals, just four days after he reached 100 goals for the club in their Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul.
According to football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, Messi had reached the 930-goal milestone with his 75th free-kick goal.
Inter Miami moved ahead in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez converted to make it 2-1, but San Diego responded eight minutes later through Dreyer, who scored his second goal of the match to earn the visitors a point.
The result extended Inter Miami’s run to four consecutive MLS draws, leaving the club with 12 wins, four defeats and 10 draws from 26 matches, giving them 46 points.
At 39, Messi continues to add to his remarkable scoring record while playing a key role in Inter Miami’s MLS campaign.
