Messi receives 2026 Asturias award for Sport

Argentina football legend, Lionel Messi, has received the 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport, describing the honour as recognition that extends beyond his achievements in football.

The Inter Miami forward attended the award ceremony despite a demanding playing schedule, revealing that his father was particularly eager for him to accept the prestigious recognition in person.

According to Italian football journalist, Fabrizio Romano, who shared the remarks on X on Friday, Messi said his father played a significant role in encouraging him to attend the ceremony.

“My father was extremely excited about this award.

“We knew it would be difficult because of my match schedule, but he really insisted that we come, that I travel here to spend these days and receive the award,” he said.

Messi explained that the recognition meant more to him than his accomplishments on the pitch, describing it as an honour that reflects a broader significance beyond his football career.

“This award goes beyond what you do on the pitch or what I’ve achieved throughout my career,” he said.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also expressed happiness over his father’s reaction to the award, saying he was confident that his father was equally delighted with the achievement.

He also achieved remarkable success during his time at Spanish giants Barcelona before moving to Inter Miami.

The Princesa de Asturias Awards honour exceptional contributions across several fields, including sports, the arts, sciences and international cooperation.
