England recall Alexander-Arnold, Palmer for Nations League

Real Madrid defender, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, have returned to the England squad after being omitted from the country’s World Cup team, with manager Thomas Tuchel naming a 27-man squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid, received his first England call-up since June 2025, while Palmer earned a recall after missing the tournament squad despite enjoying an impressive start to the new season.

Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha, Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite are among the other notable inclusions in Tuchel’s squad.

Ngumoha impressed during his England debut against New Zealand in June, while Scott was previously part of the team’s pre-tournament training group in Florida.

Branthwaite, who has one England cap from 2024, has also been handed his first call-up under Tuchel.

Lewis Hall, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are among those returning to international duty.

However, Phil Foden, Morgan Gibbs-White and Adam Wharton were not recalled, while World Cup squad members Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney and Noni Madueke were also left out.

“It’s an opportunity for Trent of course. He had a good start to the season, I would say,” Tuchel said.

“He started some matches for Real Madrid. They have good results and it’s a chance for him to claim what he feels is yours, his place on the right side, so here we go.”

England will begin their Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on September 26.

They will then travel to Prague to face the Czech Republic three days later.

Tuchel’s side will visit Croatia on October 3 before rounding off the international window with another home fixture against the Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6.
