Liverpool advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield on Tuesday, with Dominik Szoboszlai sealing the victory with a stunning late strike.
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 21st minute, giving the hosts a deserved lead before Cody Gakpo doubled their advantage nine minutes into the second half.
Tottenham responded through Conor Gallagher, who headed home in the 69th minute to reduce the deficit and give the visitors hope of forcing the game towards extra time.
However, Liverpool substitute Dominik Szoboszlai ended Tottenham’s hopes in spectacular fashion in stoppage time, volleying home from about 25 yards to make it 3-1 and secure Liverpool’s place in the round of 16.
Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgio Mamardashvili also played a key role in the victory, making several important saves to deny Tottenham, although he was unable to prevent Gallagher’s goal.
The result extended Tottenham’s difficult record at Anfield, with Spurs having won just once in their last 31 visits to Liverpool.
They also remain without a victory against a top-flight opponent this season.
