Carabao Cup: Onyeka doubtful, others to miss Coventry, Aston Villa clash

Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka, is a doubt for Coventry City’s Carabao Cup third-round clash against Aston Villa on Wednesday after suffering a hand injury, with the Nigerian among several players whose availability is uncertain for the Midlands encounter.

Onyeka, who joined Coventry permanently this year, will be assessed ahead of the game as manager Frank Lampard contends with a depleted squad.

The midfielder had recently returned to contention after missing two matches before suffering the latest setback.

Coventry will already be without Taiwo Awoniyi, who is suspended following his red card in Sunday’s 5-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton.

Haji Wright, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Josh Eccles and Luke Woolfenden are also expected to miss the encounter, with the quartet not expected to return until around the international break.

Aston Villa also have several injury concerns ahead of the trip to Coventry. Ian Maatsen is expected to miss the game with an ankle injury, while Pau Torres is sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Amadou Onana remains out for the season with a serious knee injury, while Leon Goretzka is unavailable after suffering a setback.

Matty Cash is also a doubt after missing Villa’s last two matches with muscular discomfort.
