Spain beat Falconets 2-0 in U-20 Women’s World Cup opener

Nigeria’s Falconets began their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign on a disappointing note after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening Group F fixture on Monday.

The Spanish side took control early at the Arena Sosnowiec, breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute through Marisa Garcia.

Garcia capitalised on a defensive lapse after Nigeria failed to properly clear the ball from their penalty area, giving Spain an early advantage.

The Falconets struggled to create clear-cut opportunities as Spain dominated possession and dictated the tempo for much of the first half.

Nigeria head coach, Moses Aduku made changes at the interval, bringing on Victory Lucky and Precious Oscar in an attempt to change the course of the contest.

Oscar came close to pulling one back for Nigeria but could not find the target as her effort went wide.

Spain eventually doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when substitute Alba Cerrato finished at the near post following a well-worked passing move into the Nigerian penalty area.

Aduku subsequently introduced Chisom Nwachukwu and Ramotalahi Kareem, but the changes could not spark a comeback as Spain comfortably protected their advantage until the final whistle.

Nigeria started with Christiana Uzoma in goal, while Onyedikachi Ekezie, Jumai Adebayo and Tumininu Adeshina formed the defensive line.

Favour Nkwocha, Kafayat Mafisere, Tosin Rafiu and Rebecca Adegbemile operated in midfield, with Queen Joseph, Folajomi Olabiyi and Mary Mamudu leading the attack.

In the other Group F encounter, China recorded a convincing 5-0 victory over tournament debutants New Caledonia to move to the top of the standings.

The Falconets will look to bounce back when they face China in their second group match on Thursday, September 10.
