Rivers assembly probes govt funds to PAMO varsity

The Rivers State House of Assembly has set up a seven-member committee to investigate funds released by the state government to PAMO University of Medical Sciences, Port Harcourt, since the institution was established in 2017.

The committee, chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, was constituted by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, pursuant to Section 128 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Enemi George.

According to the statement, the investigation is aimed at determining the total amount of public funds released to the university since its establishment and examining whether the money was used for the purposes for which it was approved.

The committee is also expected to investigate the university’s scholarship programme and identify its beneficiaries, if any.

The statement quoted the Speaker as saying, “The committee has been mandated to unravel how much funds the University has received from the Rivers State Government since inception in 2017; determine whether such funds were adequately utilized for purposes they were meant for and ascertain the number as well as identities of all scholarship scheme beneficiaries if any, amongst other things.”

Other members of the committee are Silvanus Nwankwo, Lemchi Nyeche, Henrietta Loolo, Peter Abbey, Napoleon Ukalikpe and Emilia Amadi.

The House directed the committee to submit its report on or before September 30, 2026.

The probe comes after the Assembly declined to approve the N6bn earmarked for PAMO University in the Rivers State 2026 budget.

PAMO University of Medical Sciences was founded in 2017 by former Rivers State Governor, Peter Odili, who serves as the institution’s Pro-Chancellor.
