Death toll from Nepal flash floods hits 469

The death toll from devastating flash floods in central Nepal has climbed to 469, as rescue teams continue searching for victims and survivors three days after the disaster.

Nepal Police said on Friday that more bodies had been recovered across eight districts affected by the floods.

Chitwan recorded the highest number of fatalities with 178 bodies recovered, followed by Nawalparasi East with 110, Gorkha with 44, Nuwakot with 37 and Dhading with 33.

Authorities also reported 28 deaths in Tanahu, 27 in Nawalparasi West and 12 in Rasuwa.

Meanwhile, 1,545 people who were injured or stranded have been rescued from various affected areas.

Of that number, 84 people remain in hospitals in Kathmandu receiving medical treatment.
Search and rescue efforts entered their third day, with 7,451 security personnel deployed across the affected areas.

The force includes 2,391 Nepal Army personnel.

The disaster occurred on Wednesday after an ice-rock avalanche triggered by a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border sent a massive surge of water, mud and debris through parts of central Nepal.

The powerful flow destroyed homes, swept away vehicles, roads and bridges, and caused damage to several hydropower projects.

Authorities are continuing rescue and recovery operations in the affected communities as the full extent of the destruction emerges.
