The Lagos State Government has commenced the reconstruction of six roads across Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area and Ifelodun Local Council Development Area as part of efforts to improve transportation and boost economic activities in the communities.
The Punch reported that the projects, covering a combined distance of 1,835 metres, were formally flagged off with the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Special Adviser on Rural Development, Nurudeen Agbaje.
The roads being rehabilitated include Asubiojo Street, measuring 320 metres, and Owoseni Street, 115 metres, in Ifelodun LCDA.
In Ajeromi-Ifelodun, the intervention covers Cemetery Market Road, 250 metres; Isikalu Street, 560 metres; Alayabiagba Street, 320 metres; and Odofin Street, 270 metres.
The government said the roads would be reconstructed with interlocking pavement and covered drainage systems.
Solar-powered streetlights would also be installed upon completion.
The projects are scheduled for completion within 12 months.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Agbaje said the intervention formed part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s strategy of extending infrastructure development to local communities instead of focusing solely on major roads and urban centres.
He said the projects were designed to deliver “meaningful development closer to residents at the grassroots,” particularly in areas where poor local infrastructure affects transportation and commercial activities.
According to him, the intervention demonstrates the administration’s commitment to improving residents’ quality of life while creating an environment that supports businesses and other economic activities at the grassroots.
Agbaje said the projects would “improve movement within the benefiting communities, improve access to markets and public services, reduce transportation costs and travel time,” while also creating employment opportunities and stimulating local economic activity.
He added that the provision of covered drainage would complement the roadworks by improving the durability and effectiveness of the infrastructure.
The roads serve several residential communities, markets and public facilities, making their rehabilitation important for the movement of residents and goods.
Government officials said the upgraded routes would ease transportation difficulties, improve access to essential services and strengthen connections between neighbouring communities.
The planned solar streetlights are also expected to improve visibility and security along the roads once the projects are completed.
Agbaje noted that the intervention aligned with the wider grassroots development objectives of the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, which places emphasis on infrastructure and inclusive development.
He stressed that improving infrastructure in local communities remained essential to achieving broader development across Lagos State.
The six projects are being implemented as one coordinated infrastructure intervention, combining road reconstruction, drainage facilities and street lighting across the two local government areas.
