Tennis: Serena Williams to partner Alcaraz in US Open return

Serena Williams is set to make her return to the US Open by partnering Carlos Alcaraz in the mixed doubles event at this year’s tournament.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion and world No. 2 Alcaraz were among the pairings announced by the United States Tennis Association on Saturday.

Williams, 44, will return to the US Open for the first time since 2022, although she will not compete in the singles draw.

The American has won the tournament’s singles title six times.

The USTA also confirmed that Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, received the final women’s wildcard for the singles main draw.

Williams’ sister, Venus, 46, had earlier been awarded another wildcard.

Williams previously won the US Open mixed doubles title in 1998 alongside Max Mirnyi. She also recently reunited with Venus in women’s doubles at Cincinnati, where they were eliminated in the opening round.

Mixed doubles action at the National Tennis Center will begin on Tuesday and conclude on Wednesday, ahead of the main US Open tournament, which starts on August 30.

Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz have also been paired together after their original partners, Jack Draper and Elena Rybakina, withdrew from the event.

Diana Shnaider, meanwhile, will look for a new partner after Daniil Medvedev pulled out before the draw is made on Sunday.
