Multiple people have died following a collision involving a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat in South Bank, near Middlesbrough, Teesside, in England, the United Kingdom police have confirmed.
The crash occurred at about 3:39am BST on Saturday along the A66, according to Cleveland Police.
The North East Ambulance Service said 14 ambulance resources were deployed to the scene, where several casualties were pronounced dead.
A police spokesman said: “Sadly, the collision has resulted in multiple fatalities. We are working to identify the victims and contact their families.”
The A66 remains shut in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane, with police warning that the closure is expected to remain in place for some time.
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes as a significant number of emergency service vehicles remain at the scene.
Police described the incident as a rapidly developing situation and urged members of the public not to speculate about what happened.
The North East Ambulance Service said: “Sadly, despite the best efforts of everyone attending, a number of patients died at the scene,” the service said.
“We send condolences to all of those affected by such a tragic event and thank everyone for all they did to help.”
