A fire incident at Purple Crown Hotel on Balogun Street, along Awolowo Road, Ikeja, Lagos, has been contained by emergency responders, with no death or injury recorded.
The Punch reported that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency disclosed that the incident was reported at about 9:52 am on Saturday, prompting the deployment of its Tiger Squad alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Nigeria Police.
According to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, responders arrived at the scene within 10 minutes of receiving the distress call and found that a room on the first floor of the hotel had been severely affected.
“Upon arrival, responders discovered that a room on the first floor of the hotel had been severely affected by fire,” he stated.
Oke-Osanyintolu said preliminary findings indicated that an electrical fault could have triggered the blaze.
“the fire may have been triggered by an electrical fault within the affected room.”
He explained that the incident caused substantial fire and smoke damage to part of the building, although all guests and members of staff were evacuated safely to a designated muster point.
“There was no loss of life and no injury recorded. All hotel guests and staff were safely evacuated from the building to the designated muster point,” the statement said.
The permanent secretary added that responders and police officers conducted a roll call to account for everyone who had been inside the hotel.
A joint operation involving LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the police subsequently brought the fire under control and completely extinguished it.
“The joint operation focused on containing the fire, preventing further spread to adjoining rooms, and ensuring the safety of both occupants and responders,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
Following the incident, access to the entire building was restricted as a precaution due to the extent of the fire and smoke damage.
The affected section was also cordoned off pending a comprehensive assessment of the building’s structural and electrical integrity by the relevant authorities.
“The situation is now fully under control. The fire has been extinguished and the immediate danger neutralised.
“Normal operations will only resume upon clearance from safety officials.”
Oke-Osanyintolu commended the emergency responders for their speed and coordination, noting that their prompt intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading further and protected lives and property.
He advised hotel operators, facility managers and other business owners to carry out regular electrical maintenance, properly maintain fire suppression equipment and train their staff on emergency evacuation procedures.
“Compliance with the Lagos State Safety Commission guidelines remains non-negotiable,” the statement added.
He also urged residents to remain calm and promptly report emergencies through the Lagos State emergency toll-free lines: 112, 767 or 08000 112 112.
The incident came shortly after LASEMA responded to separate fire outbreaks in Igando and Anifowoshe, Ikeja, where no casualties were also recorded.
The first incident occurred at about 7:37 pm on Sunday at 23 Shaba Ojo Street, near Omolade Bus Stop, Igando, while the second was reported around 11:30 pm at 61 Abeokuta Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja.
Oke-Osanyintolu had said the agency’s response teams attended to several emergency incidents across Lagos between Sunday evening and the early hours of Monday.
