Sokoto approves N1.76bn to support security operations

The Sokoto State Government has approved N1.759bn for the purchase of 1,000 Bajaj motorcycles for security agencies as part of efforts to strengthen operations against banditry across the state.

The approval was made during the sixth regular meeting of the Sokoto State Executive Council for 2026, presided over by the Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammad Gobir.

A statement issued on Thursday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abubakar Bawa, said the motorcycles would improve the mobility of security personnel, especially in remote and difficult-to-access areas.

The procurement is expected to complement 62 armoured vehicles recently acquired by the state government at a reported cost of N27bn and distributed to security agencies.

According to Bawa, the state government considers improved logistics essential to enabling security personnel to respond effectively to criminal activities.

“The procurement of the 1,000 motorcycles is aimed at complementing the recently procured armoured vehicles and enhancing the operational capacity of security agencies across the state,” the statement quoted the council as saying.

Beyond security, the executive council approved several projects covering education, healthcare, water supply and skills development.

The council approved N723.17m for the renovation of Government Technical College, Runjin Sambo, while N498.99m was approved for the rehabilitation of A.A. Raji Special School.

Bawa said the projects reflected the administration’s focus on addressing security challenges while improving infrastructure and developing human capital.

“The government remains committed to implementing projects and programmes that will directly impact the lives of the people and contribute to the overall development of Sokoto State,” he said.

The executive council meeting, which lasted about two hours, considered proposals relating to the state’s security and socio-economic development.
