Borno man arrested for allegedly impersonating EFCC official

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a man identified as Nuhu Dahiru for allegedly impersonating an officer of the agency and obtaining N3m under false pretences in Borno State.

According to The Punch, Dahiru was apprehended by operatives of the EFCC Maiduguri Zonal Directorate at Tashan Bama, along Bama Road, Maiduguri, following intelligence received by the commission.

The anti-graft agency disclosed this in a statement shared on its official X account on Monday.

According to the EFCC, the suspect allegedly assumed the identity of one of its officers and used it to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

The statement read in part, “Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested one Nuhu Dahiru for impersonation and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N3,000,000.00.”

The commission said its operatives acted on credible information that Dahiru had been presenting himself as an EFCC official while allegedly using the false identity to obtain money from members of the public.

It stated, “The suspect was arrested in Tashan Bama, along Bama Road, Maiduguri, Borno State, following credible intelligence indicating that he had been parading himself as an officer of the EFCC, and thereby defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.”

The EFCC further disclosed that N3m was recovered from the suspect at the time of his arrest.

The agency said the arrest formed part of its efforts to curb fraudulent activities involving individuals who falsely present themselves as its officials to commit financial crimes.

Dahiru is expected to be prosecuted after investigators conclude their inquiries into the allegations.
