Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been eliminated from the qualification race for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup after a 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.
The decisive encounter, played at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, also ended Nigeria’s hopes of featuring at the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The WAFU Zone B final was crucial because the champions were guaranteed a place at the 2027 U-20 AFCON, which doubles as the qualifying competition for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Burkina Faso dominated proceedings from the start, racing into a three-goal lead within the opening 15 minutes and putting Nigeria under immense pressure.
The Flying Eagles struggled to cope with the Young Stallions’ attacking intensity and went into the interval facing a significant deficit.
Coach Abdu Maikaba’s men returned for the second half determined to reduce the deficit but were unable to mount the comeback required.
Burkina Faso later found the net again to complete a 4-1 triumph, with Nigeria’s lone goal serving only as consolation.
The defeat was a repeat of Nigeria’s earlier setback against Burkina Faso, who had beaten the Flying Eagles 2-0 in the group stage.
Nigeria had been hoping to overturn that result in the final, but the Young Stallions once again proved too strong when the stakes were highest.
The Flying Eagles secured their place in the final after edging Côte d’Ivoire in a dramatic semi-final.
The match finished 2-2 after regulation time before Nigeria won 4-3 on penalties.
Burkina Faso reached the final unbeaten, having defeated Niger 2-0 in their semi-final encounter.
The Young Stallions subsequently capped their impressive campaign by defeating Nigeria to win the WAFU Zone B title and secure their ticket to the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
The outcome means Nigeria, seven-time champions of the U-20 AFCON, will miss the 2027 edition and, consequently, lose the opportunity to qualify for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup through the continental tournament.
