2027 Elections: Rainbow Coalition begins reconciliation talks with Fubara

The reconciliation committee of the Rainbow Coalition has commenced efforts to resolve differences between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his supporters and other members of the political group ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to The Punch, the committee, headed by former Senator Magnus Abe, held its inaugural meeting with representatives of both camps at the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The development followed a recent disclosure by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that the coalition would engage with Fubara as part of its reconciliation efforts. Wike had also said during his monthly media briefing in Abuja last Wednesday that the governor had fixed a date to meet with the committee.

Among those attending the meeting as allies of Wike were former Obio/Akpor Local Government Chairman, Dr Samuel Nwanosike; former Rivers State APC Chairman, Amb Desmond Akawor; and a member of the House of Representatives, Kelechi Nwogu.

Representing Fubara’s camp was a former Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr Tamunosiki Gogo-Jaja.

The APC governorship candidate for the 2027 election, Kingsley Chinda, was also present at the meeting.

The committee comprises 13 members drawn from the two camps, with Abe serving as its chairman.

The outcome of the meeting was not immediately disclosed.

A source, however, said the session was limited to members selected to participate in the reconciliation process.

Attempts to obtain details of the meeting were unsuccessful, as four persons contacted by our correspondent failed to respond to calls as of Sunday night.

Fubara had recently declared at a public event that he had returned to his “political family” and expressed his support for Chinda, who is expected to contest the 2027 governorship election on the APC platform.

The governor also appealed to his supporters to join the Rainbow Coalition and back Chinda in the forthcoming election.

Several of his allies have since indicated their intention to join the coalition, including former Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Chijioke Ihunwo, and his former Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Dr Darlington Orji.
