Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after producing a commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C match on Wednesday.
The defending champions responded in style in Rabat, knowing only a win would guarantee progression to the knockout stage.
Captain Asisat Oshoala gave the Super Falcons the breakthrough in the 21st minute, calmly converting a penalty after a VAR review confirmed an Egyptian defender had handled the ball inside the box.
The Falcons dominated proceedings throughout the encounter, creating numerous opportunities and extending their advantage with an attacking display that left Egypt struggling to keep pace.
Although the Egyptians reduced the deficit before the interval and added another goal from the penalty spot late in the game, Nigeria maintained control.
Rasheedat Ajibade and Joy Omewa wrapped up the emphatic victory with stoppage-time strikes, sealing a memorable 6-2 triumph and confirming Nigeria’s place in the last eight.
Speaking after the match, Oshoala credited the team’s unity and determination for the turnaround following a difficult start to the competition.
“We knew how important this game was. Everyone stayed focused, fought for one another and we got the victory we wanted,” the captain said.
Head coach Justine Madugu also applauded his players for delivering when it mattered most, describing their display as a testament to their character.
“We understood the importance of this match, and the players responded brilliantly.
They showed commitment and handled the pressure well,” Madugu said.
Nigeria’s qualification completed a remarkable recovery after an opening defeat to Malawi.
Back-to-back wins over Zambia and Egypt ensured the nine-time African champions progressed to the quarter-finals, where they will continue their pursuit of another continental crown.
