Algeria beat Kenya 2-0 to reach WAFCON quarter-finals

Algeria booked a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Kenya 2-0 on Tuesday, finishing second in Group A behind hosts Morocco.

The North Africans laid the foundation for victory with two first-half goals before producing a composed defensive display after the break to comfortably see out the contest and confirm their progression to the knockout stage.

Captain Marine Dafeur broke the deadlock in the 14th minute with a superbly struck free-kick from long range that sailed beyond Kenyan goalkeeper Lilian Awuor, giving Algeria the early advantage.

The lead was doubled just nine minutes later following relentless pressure from Lynda Bendris.

The Algerian forward closed down goalkeeper Elizabeth Ochaka inside the penalty area, forcing a costly mistake before directing her effort towards goal.

Although Awuor managed to get a touch, she could not prevent the ball from crossing the line.

Kenya attempted to respond and came close midway through the opening half when Martha Emedot unleashed a powerful effort from distance, but her shot drifted narrowly wide.

Algeria continued to create the better opportunities and nearly extended their lead before the interval.

Morgane Ikene rose highest to meet a cross in the 37th minute, but her header flashed just past the upright.

The Harambee Starlets returned for the second half with greater urgency and controlled more of the possession, searching for a route back into the game. However, Algeria’s well-organised backline stood firm, allowing few clear chances.

Kenya’s best opportunity came with 10 minutes remaining when captain Mwanalima Jereko controlled the ball brilliantly before sending a low effort narrowly wide of the post.

Despite Kenya’s improved performance after the restart, Algeria remained composed, managed the closing stages effectively and secured a deserved victory.
