Otti hands over NAF facility to FG in Abia

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Friday handed over the newly completed Nigerian Air Force Administrative Complex in Umuahia to the Federal Government in a move aimed at strengthening security in the state and the South-East region.

The Punch reported that the facility was officially presented during a ceremony in Umuahia attended by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke, and the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.).

Addressing dignitaries at the event, Otti reaffirmed that safeguarding lives and property remains a core responsibility of his administration, describing the project as a product of effective collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments in promoting a common security agenda.

The governor said, “The facility demonstrates my administration’s resolve to leave no stone unturned in protecting Abians and visitors alike from all forms of security threats.”

“For us, the right to security for our people, whether they are residents or visitors, is non-negotiable,” Otti added.

The governor also thanked President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force for facilitating the establishment of an Air Force presence in Abia State. He pledged the state’s continued support to ensure the force operates effectively in carrying out its responsibilities.

In his remarks, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke, praised Otti for making what he described as an exceptional contribution to national security through the project.

He noted that the establishment of a permanent Nigerian Air Force base in Abia represented a significant milestone that would enhance security operations, improve operational efficiency and promote economic growth across the South-East.

“This gesture transcends politics. It goes far beyond bricks and mortar. It is a defining contribution to national defence and stability and a trailblazing legacy that will bear your name in the annals of Nigeria’s security architecture,” the air chief said.

Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), lauded the governor for demonstrating a practical commitment to improving security through strategic investments, describing him as a leader who backs his words with action.

He congratulated the Abia State Government and its people on the initiative, emphasizing that ensuring national security requires the combined efforts of governments at all levels, security agencies, communities and citizens.

The minister further urged Nigerian Air Force officers and personnel posted to the state to maintain discipline, professionalism and contribute positively to the state’s peace and development.

“I want to charge the Nigerian Air Force that your personnel coming here should make Abia State a better place. We don’t want to hear issues arising because of your presence. Already, good things are happening; make it better,” he said.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (retd.), described security as the foundation for sustainable development.

He explained that the decision to build and hand over the Nigerian Air Force Administrative Complex was driven by Governor Otti’s strategic commitment to reinforcing Abia State’s security framework.
