WAFCON: Debutants Malawi stun Super Falcons 3-2 in Group C opener

Nigeria’s bid to secure an unprecedented 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title got off to a disappointing start on Tuesday after debutants Malawi stunned the reigning champions 3-2 in their Group C opener.

The Scorchers delivered one of the biggest shocks in the competition’s history, producing a fearless performance to defeat the record 10-time champions and make a dream start to their maiden WAFCON campaign.

Following a balanced first half that ended without a goal, Malawi found the breakthrough in the 73rd minute when Temwa Chawinga fired past the Nigerian defence. Six minutes later, captain Tabitha Chawinga doubled the lead, leaving the Super Falcons facing an uphill battle.

Nigeria responded in stoppage time as skipper Rasheedat Ajibade confidently converted a penalty in the 92nd minute to cut the deficit and spark hopes of an unlikely comeback.

However, those hopes were quickly dashed when Temwa Chawinga completed her brace three minutes later, restoring Malawi’s two-goal advantage with what proved to be the decisive strike.

Substitute Uchenna Kanu pulled another goal back for Nigeria in the ninth minute of added time, but it came too late to prevent the defending champions from suffering a surprise opening defeat.

The historic victory marked a memorable WAFCON debut for Malawi, whose spirited display underlined their growing status on the continental stage and significantly strengthened their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.

Nigeria, meanwhile, must regroup quickly ahead of their second Group C fixture as they seek to revive their title defence.

Speaking before the encounter, Malawi head coach Lovemore Fazili expressed confidence that his side could upset the African giants.

“Getting this far means that we are ready for this match. People may underestimate us, but we are a good team, capable of causing an upset. We are not resigned victims,” Fazili said.

Captain Tabitha Chawinga also insisted her teammates would not be intimidated by Nigeria’s reputation.

“It was my dream to play in the WAFCON. The time has come. We know Nigeria’s worth. They are a great nation, but we must focus on ourselves. Our players need to compete without any inferiority complex,” she said.
