The Edo State Security Squad has arrested 12 suspected cultists during a raid on criminal hideouts in Benin City as part of ongoing efforts to tackle crime in the state.
The operation, carried out on Friday, targeted Asoro Hill in Uzebu
Quarters along Ekenwan Road in Oredo Local Government Area, an area authorities described as notorious for cult-related activities and drug trafficking.
Speaking to journalists in Benin on Saturday, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo State Security Squad, George Aburime, said the suspects had been handed over to the police for further investigation.
“The suspects have been transferred to the police for further investigation and will be prosecuted if found culpable,” Aburime said.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, stressing that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo would not tolerate criminal activities.
“The government remains resolute in its determination to rid Edo State of criminal elements. Any act that threatens public peace and security will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he stated.
Aburime also disclosed that members of the security squad visited Iyanomo community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area to mediate a leadership dispute involving rival groups.
According to him, the intervention was aimed at restoring peace and preventing the disagreement from escalating into violence.
“We urged the parties involved to embrace dialogue and refrain from actions capable of disrupting public order,” he added.
He further appealed to residents to support security agencies by providing useful information and avoiding the harbouring of criminals.
“Community cooperation is essential to sustaining peace and improving security across Edo State,” Aburime said.
