Infantino defends FIFA over USA star Balogun suspension

Gianni Infantino has defended the independence of FIFA’s judicial system following public criticism over the suspension of Folarin Balogun, insisting that the world football governing body’s disciplinary decisions are made without interference.

In a statement released on Monday, Infantino stressed that FIFA’s independent judicial bodies operate autonomously and determine cases solely on the evidence before them and the provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

“FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them,” Infantino said.

He added, “Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and this must always be respected.”

The FIFA president also addressed reports linking Donald Trump to the case, confirming that the US president contacted him while disciplinary proceedings were still underway.

According to Infantino, he informed Trump that the matter was before FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the appropriate process had to run its course.

“I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies. That is how FIFA’s system works, and it is a principle that I will always uphold,” he said.

Infantino acknowledged that he routinely speaks with world leaders, government officials, football stakeholders and business executives on a range of issues, including preparations for the FIFA World Cup, but maintained that such conversations do not influence disciplinary decisions.

Reflecting on the committee’s rulings, Infantino admitted that he does not always share the same view as the disciplinary panel but said respecting its decisions is essential.

“I read the decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee when they are issued. Sometimes I am surprised by them. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree,” he said.

He concluded by reaffirming FIFA’s commitment to institutional independence.

“Whether we personally like a decision or not is irrelevant. Respect for independent institutions and the rule of law is what protects the integrity of our competitions and the credibility of FIFA at all times.”

The statement comes amid widespread debate over Balogun’s suspension, with Infantino seeking to reassure football stakeholders that FIFA’s disciplinary process remains independent and free from external influence.
