Senegal star Pape Gueye takes international break after W’Cup exit

Senegal midfielder, Pape Gueye, has announced he is stepping away from international football for the time being, citing his unwillingness to continue under the current technical crew following the country’s painful World Cup elimination.

The 27-year-old Villarreal midfielder made the announcement on social media after Senegal’s dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32.

Senegal appeared to be cruising into the next round after goals from Habiib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr handed them a two-goal cushion.

However, Belgium staged a remarkable comeback, scoring twice in the closing stages before sealing victory with a 125th-minute penalty in extra time.

Sharing his decision on his Instagram Story, Gueye wrote, “l’Il be back to give you a few words regarding elimination… but l announce today that as long as it’s this technical staff l’II take a break from the selection.”

Gueye was substituted shortly after the hour mark while Senegal were still leading 2-0, with head coach Pape Thiaw introducing Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara.

Belgium began their fightback in the closing minutes when Romelu Lukaku finished from a tight angle to cut the deficit.

Moments later, Youri Tielemans headed home from Leandro Trossard’s cross to restore parity and force extra time.

Despite dominating much of the contest, Senegal were unable to halt Belgium’s resurgence.

The decisive moment came deep into the second period of extra time when the video assistant referee awarded Belgium a penalty, allowing Tielemans to convert from the spot and complete a dramatic turnaround that sent Rudi Garcia’s side into the last 16.
