Man City, Maresca to pay Chelsea £17m compensation

Chelsea have confirmed that Enzo Maresca will compensate the club following his appointment as Manchester City’s new head coach.

The 46-year-old Italian has signed a three-year contract with City, replacing Pep Guardiola, who ended his remarkable decade-long reign at the club in May.

Maresca’s move was delayed while both clubs negotiated a compensation agreement.

Although the exact amount remains undisclosed, a source told BBC Sport that Manchester City are paying Chelsea approximately £17m to secure his services.

The compensation arrangement between Chelsea and City is separate from another agreement the London club says it has reached with Maresca himself. BBC Sport has not independently verified the details of that settlement.

Maresca departed Stamford Bridge in January after Chelsea managed just one victory in seven Premier League matches.

At the time, the club indicated that the separation was by mutual consent, stating that both parties agreed “a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track”.

However, the Italian has now revealed that he personally submitted his resignation, a decision he admitted “opened a path” for his return to Manchester City.

In a statement, Chelsea described Maresca’s resignation as a “decision not to continue fulfilling his responsibilities” and confirmed that a confidential compensation agreement had been reached with the former manager.

Maresca previously worked under Guardiola as an assistant coach during City’s historic Treble-winning campaign in the 2022-23 season.

Addressing Chelsea supporters, the Italian expressed regret over the circumstances surrounding his exit.

“The decision was only mine,” Maresca wrote on Instagram.

“I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club and I apologise for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish.”
