Five people were killed and several others injured after a shooting at a youth welfare facility in Stade, northern Germany, on Monday, authorities confirmed.
Police said two individuals were taken into custody in connection with the attack, including a person believed to have carried out the shooting.
Investigators have yet to establish a motive for the incident.
“Homicides involving multiple victims occurred at a youth welfare facility,” police said. “Five people were fatally injured and additional individuals sustained injuries.”
The shooting prompted a large-scale police response along Dankersstrasse, located south of Stade’s city centre.
Residents were advised to stay away from the area and comply with instructions issued by emergency personnel.
Stade, a city of roughly 500,000 residents, lies about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Hamburg.
