Ondo inaugurates Safe schools committee to strengthen security

The Ondo State Government has inaugurated a steering committee to drive the implementation of the Safe Schools Programme, a move aimed at improving security in schools and protecting students from kidnapping and other criminal activities.

The committee was inaugurated in Akure on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Igbekele Ajibefun, who said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe learning environment across the state.

The Safe Schools Programme, an initiative of the Federal Government, seeks to safeguard students, teachers, and educational facilities from violence, abductions, and related security threats.

Speaking during the inauguration, Ajibefun explained that the newly constituted committee would provide strategic direction and coordinate efforts among key stakeholders to strengthen school safety measures.

According to him, the committee comprises representatives of the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Amotekun Corps, traditional and religious leaders, as well as members of the Parents-Teachers Association.

Addressing the committee members, the commissioner urged them to take their responsibilities seriously and work towards preventing security threats in schools.

“You are to support the implementation of the Safe Schools Programme and strengthen mechanisms to prevent security threats in the educational institutions of the state,” Ajibefun said.

He stressed that the effectiveness of the programme would depend largely on the commitment and cooperation of all stakeholders involved.

Describing security as a collective responsibility, Ajibefun called for vigilance, preparedness, resilience, and collaboration in addressing emerging threats within the education sector.

He further charged members of the committee to perform their duties with dedication, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Secretary of the committee, Mr. Akindele Ige, said the establishment of the body was in response to increasing security concerns affecting schools across the country.

He noted that recent attacks on educational institutions had underscored the need for coordinated and sustained efforts to protect students, teachers, and school infrastructure.

“No meaningful teaching can take place where there is fear, and no effective learning can occur where there is insecurity,” Ige stated.

He expressed confidence that the committee would play a crucial role in developing and implementing measures that would guarantee safer learning environments for pupils and students across Ondo State.
