Inter Miami CF forward, Lionel Messi, has revealed that personal reasons contributed to his emotional, tearful celebration during Argentina national football team’s 3-0 victory over Algeria national football team, where he scored a historic hat-trick.
The 38-year-old, who may be playing in his final World Cup campaign, was visibly moved after opening the scoring in a match that showcased his enduring brilliance on the global stage.
His treble took him level with Miroslav Klose as the all-time leading World Cup goalscorer with 16 goals.
His first goal was a moment of individual magic, collecting the ball about 30 yards from goal, surging forward, and curling a superb strike into the top-right corner. He celebrated passionately, but soon became emotional, wiping away tears after the stunning effort.
After the match, Messi acknowledged the support he received during a challenging personal period, suggesting that issues away from football had affected his build-up to the tournament.
He said, “I cried after the first goal, yes… but it was something completely unrelated to football.
“I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength.”
