Delta train accident victims discharged from hospital – NRC

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed that all passengers injured in the June 8 train accident on the Warri–Itakpe corridor have been treated and discharged from hospital, while recovery of equipment involved in the incident has also been completed.

The accident, which occurred at about 4:17 p.m. near the Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station in Agbor, Delta State, left four coaches of the train derailed and capsized.

The train had departed Itakpe Station at noon en route Ujevwu in Warri and was carrying 442 passengers alongside 40 operational staff, including crew members, security operatives, medical personnel, cleaners, and caterers.

Five passengers were confirmed dead, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to nearby medical facilities in Agbor and surrounding communities for treatment.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said the corporation had successfully accounted for all persons on board the train.

“All injured passengers have now been treated and discharged,” Opeifa said, adding that only one NRC staff member who sustained severe injuries is still receiving specialist medical care.

He expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, describing the incident as painful and assuring that the corporation would continue to support affected families.

“We deeply sympathise with the families of the deceased and remain committed to standing with them through this difficult time,” he said.

Opeifa also commended medical teams at General Hospital Owa Oyibu, Owa Alero Hospital, and Central Hospital in Agbor for what he described as their “swift response, professionalism, and compassionate care,” noting that their efforts were critical to stabilising injured passengers.

According to him, the NRC has constituted a medical and victim support committee to engage survivors, relatives of victims, and other affected persons.

The committee, he said, has already begun visits to injured passengers and bereaved families across parts of Delta State and will continue its outreach to Warri and surrounding communities.

“As part of our ongoing response, the committee is ensuring direct engagement with victims’ families and providing necessary support where possible,” he added.

The NRC further disclosed that it has commenced preliminary rail track restoration works through its engineering teams following the completion of rescue and equipment recovery operations.

Opeifa assured the public that the corporation is cooperating fully with relevant authorities investigating the cause of the accident and would implement safety recommendations arising from the probe.

“We remain committed to strengthening safety systems and ensuring the reliability of rail transport in Nigeria,” he said.

Passengers and members of the public seeking information about the incident have been advised to contact the NRC Incident Desk through designated phone lines provided by the corporation.
