Ondo govt, police dismiss kidnapping rumours in Akure schools

The Ondo State Government and the state Police Command have refuted viral claims alleging that kidnappers invaded a school within Akure, describing the reports as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the government clarified that no kidnapping incident had been recorded in any educational institution in the state capital.

“There is no record, report, or incident of kidnapping in any primary, secondary, or tertiary institution in Akure,” the statement said, adding that schools in the metropolis remain “safe, open, and fully functional.”

According to the government, security agencies including the police, Amotekun Corps, and the Department of State Services have conducted checks across schools in Akure and confirmed that learning activities are ongoing without disruption.

It urged residents, particularly parents and guardians, to disregard the circulating information and avoid sharing unverified content capable of causing panic.

“We encourage the public to ignore fake news and desist from spreading rumours that may create fear,” the statement added.

Similarly, the Ondo State Police Command dismissed the claims, saying there was no intelligence or report suggesting any bandit invasion or kidnapping activity in the city.

Police spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh said security assessments carried out in Akure showed “no credible threat” to schools or residents.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, also appealed for calm, assuring that security operatives remain committed to safeguarding lives and maintaining normal academic activities across the state.

The command further warned against the spread of misinformation, noting that individuals responsible for circulating false security alerts could face investigation and prosecution.

Authorities reiterated their call for residents to report genuine security concerns through official channels rather than relying on social media rumours.
