Unity Cup: Chelle urges Super Eagles to improve despite Zimbabwe win

Super Eagles head coach, Éric Chelle, has urged his side to raise their performance levels despite securing a convincing win over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final.

Nigeria’s Nigeria national football team booked their place in the final of the Unity Cup with a 2-0 victory over the Warriors at The Valley (London) on Tuesday night.

Femi Azeez produced a dream debut display, scoring twice to power Nigeria into the final, where they will meet either Jamaica national football team or Iran national football team.

The 24-year-old Millwall F.C. winger wasted no time announcing himself, opening the scoring after just five minutes. He latched onto a well-worked team move and fired a left-footed strike past Zimbabwe goalkeeper Future Sibanda.

Nigeria maintained pressure afterwards, with Alhassan Yusuf, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Philip Otele all going close to extending the advantage.

Azeez eventually doubled his tally in the 62nd minute, finishing smartly inside the box after another flowing attacking move involving Otele and Terem Moffi, who provided the final assist.

Despite the positive result, Chelle insisted there is still plenty of work ahead for his squad as they prepare for the final.

“This is only a friendly game. This is not the World Cup qualifier. They need to work hard,” Chelle said at his post-match interview after the game at The Valley in London.

“They need to try to understand what I want, what the technical staff want and the high level is difficult.

“So you see, we made some mistakes with the ball. For sure, you see tomorrow we will it work out during training,” he said.

Nigeria will now face the winner of Wednesday’s semi-final clash between Jamaica and India in Saturday’s final at The Valley, with Chelle expected to demand a more disciplined and polished performance from his side.
