Lionel Messi has sparked fresh injury concern just weeks before the World Cup after medical examinations confirmed he is suffering from muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, Inter Miami CF announced on Monday.
The MLS club did not provide a clear timeline for the Argentine captain’s return following his early exit during Sunday’s thrilling 6-4 win over Philadelphia, where he was substituted in the 73rd minute.
The 38-year-old, widely regarded as the leader of the defending world champions, was seen clutching the back of his left leg before signalling to be replaced, though he was able to walk off unaided toward the dressing room.
In an official update, Inter Miami said, “After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring,” Inter Miami said in a statement.
“The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”
The update offers little clarity on the condition of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as Argentina national football team prepares to defend its title at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, starting June 11.
Argentina begin their campaign five days later against Algeria in Kansas City.
Messi has been carefully managed by Inter Miami since his arrival in 2023, with the club frequently resting him during busy fixture periods to preserve his fitness.
Major League Soccer has also introduced a break to accommodate the World Cup schedule.
Although Messi has not officially confirmed his participation, he is widely expected to feature at what would be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.
Argentina are set to announce their squad next week and will travel to the United States for pre-tournament friendlies against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9.
