Al Nassr were denied the chance to clinch the Roshn Saudi League title on Tuesday night after a heartbreaking stoppage-time own goal handed Al Hilal a dramatic 1-1 draw in the Capital Derby at Al Awwal Park.
The league leaders appeared on course for a crucial victory and their first domestic crown in seven years when defender Mohamed Simakan reacted quickest to a loose ball in the 37th minute, firing home from close range to put Al Nassr ahead before the break.
With the hosts protecting their narrow advantage deep into added time, disaster struck in the 98th minute.
Inigo Martinez collided with goalkeeper Bento while attempting to deal with a long throw into the penalty area, and the ball deflected off the Brazilian shot-stopper into his own net.
The late equaliser sparked wild celebrations from Al Hilal and silenced a packed Al Awwal Park, with even substituted captain Cristiano Ronaldo left stunned on the sidelines.
Despite the setback, Al Nassr remain five points clear at the top of the table. However, Al Hilal still have a game in hand and could reduce the deficit to just two points if they defeat NEOM Sports Club on Saturday.
Should that happen, the title race will be pushed to the final weekend of the season, when Al Nassr welcome Damac, while Al Hilal travel to face Al Fayha.
