Nigeria has unveiled a 45-man contingent for the forthcoming CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, with world record holder Tobi Amusan among the headline names as the country eyes a strong medal haul in Ghana.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria named a squad of 25 female and 20 male athletes for the continental championships scheduled to take place in Accra.
Amusan leads the women’s lineup and is expected to compete in the 100m hurdles alongside Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday. Sprint star Rosemary Chukwuma also features prominently and will run in the women’s 100m and 4x100m relay, teaming up with Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria Thompson Omokwe and Tejiri Ugoh.
Other key names in the women’s team include experienced 400m runner Patience Okon George, long jump specialist Ruth Usoro and hammer thrower Oyesade Olatoye, as Nigeria continues to field a balanced mix of veterans and emerging talents.
On the men’s side, sprint standout Favour Ashe and Africa’s top shot put athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will lead the charge for medals.
The men’s sprint group also features Enoch Adegoke, Usheoritse Itsekiri and Chidera Ezakor, while the 400m and relay squads include Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli and Chidi Okezie.
Field events will see contributions from Romeo Bernard, Emmanuel Audu and javelin thrower Adams Samuel Kure.
The Accra championships will serve as another key competitive platform for Nigerian athletes as preparations continue toward major international events, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
