Amusan wins Brescia Grand Prix ahead Diamond League final

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan continued her preparations for the 2026 Diamond League Final with victory in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Grand Prix Brescia in Italy on Sunday.

The Nigerian clocked 12.56 seconds to finish first despite facing a strong headwind of 1.7m/s.

American hurdler Alaysha Johnson finished second in 12.62 seconds, while Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent took third place in 12.75 seconds.

Amusan’s triumph came just days after her world record was surpassed by American Olympic champion Masai Russell at the Zurich Diamond League.

Russell produced an impressive 12.09-second run last Thursday, shaving three hundredths of a second off Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12 seconds, set at the Letzigrund Stadium.

The 26-year-old American had earlier finished second behind Amusan, who recorded a season-best 12.23 seconds.

Amusan had held the world record for four years after setting the 12.12-second mark in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

She went on to win the championship final in 12.06 seconds, although the performance could not be recognised as a world record because of an excessive tailwind.

Amusan and Russell are set to renew their rivalry at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium, scheduled for September 4 and 5.

The Nigerian is a three-time Diamond League champion, having won the title in 2021, 2022 and 2023, and will be targeting another championship triumph this year.
