PDP faction denies leadership crisis, faults Wabara

A faction within the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed assertions of a leadership vacuum in the party following a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, insisting that its current leadership remains intact and legitimate.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, maintained that Abdulrahman Mohammed continues to serve as National Chairman, alongside Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.

He rejected claims made by some party leaders, including Adolphus Wabara, describing them as misleading interpretations of the court’s verdict.

“There is no leadership vacuum in the party. The current leadership structure remains lawful, functional, and fully recognised,” Mohammed stated.

“The Supreme Court judgment did not in any way remove or suspend any officer of the party.”

According to him, the apex court’s decision was limited to nullifying the Ibadan national convention and dismissing an appeal filed by a rival National Working Committee led by Tanimu Turaki for lacking merit.

“The ruling strictly addressed the validity of the convention. At no point did the court deliberate on, or pronounce, the suspension or expulsion of any party official,” he added.

Mohammed further accused Wabara, Turaki, and others of spreading what he described as false narratives to create confusion within the party.

He also questioned Wabara’s authority to speak on behalf of the party’s Board of Trustees, claiming his tenure had already lapsed.

“Any claim suggesting that the Board of Trustees has taken over leadership is unfounded. There is no provision in the party’s constitution granting such powers,” he said.

“The recognised leadership of the Board is now under Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.”

The spokesperson described the actions of the opposing group as an attempt to destabilise the party, alleging that the same individuals had previously ignored court orders before the disputed convention.

Meanwhile, in a split decision, the Supreme Court on Thursday invalidated the PDP’s national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, citing non-compliance with subsisting court directives.

Following the judgment, Wabara had earlier declared that the party lacked a valid leadership and announced that the Board of Trustees would assume control temporarily to stabilise its affairs.

However, the faction led by Jungudo Mohammed has urged party members, the media, and the public to disregard such claims.

“There is no crisis of leadership, no vacuum, and no justification for any interim arrangement. The party remains united under its current leadership,” he said.
