King Charles ends US tour, returns to UK

King Charles III wrapped up his four-day state visit to the United States alongside Queen Camilla with a lively community parade in Front Royal, Virginia, before departing for Bermuda, in the United Kingdom.

The visit ended on a high note, blending formal diplomacy with a relaxed public engagement that drew enthusiastic crowds and underscored efforts to strengthen ties between the UK and the US.

The royal couple’s final appearance in the US took place in the small town of Front Royal, where bluegrass and country rock music set the tone for a festive “block party” celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence.

After days of tightly controlled engagements in Washington, D.C., the event offered a more personal connection with the public, as the King and Queen greeted well-wishers during a walkabout under sunny Appalachian skies.

Residents turned out in large numbers, creating a carnival-like atmosphere filled with bunting, flags, cheerleaders, marching bands, and a parade of classic cars.

The royals also watched an Appalachian clog dancing display and joined in the spirit of the celebration by contributing dishes to a traditional “pot luck” meal, including Coronation quiche, Victoria sponge, and honey from royal hives.

The visit to Front Royal, home to about 15,000 people, highlighted small-town American culture, with local businesses and community pride on full display.

The occasion nearly didn’t happen, as the town’s mayor initially dismissed the invitation as a hoax after accidentally deleting the email.

Earlier in the day, the King and Queen concluded their official duties in Washington, bidding farewell at the White House to Donald Trump and Melania Trump.

They also paid tribute at Arlington National Cemetery, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during a solemn ceremony that included a gun salute.

The US trip, which combined high-level diplomacy with public outreach, was seen as a success, particularly following the King’s well-received address to Congress.

Following the conclusion of the visit, King Charles traveled alone to Bermuda, arriving in Hamilton for his first visit to the island as monarch.

He was welcomed at LF Wade International Airport by British Governor Andrew Murdoch, Bermuda Premier David Burt, and other dignitaries, alongside a guard of honour from the Royal Bermuda Regiment.

A formal ceremonial welcome featuring a 21-gun salute is scheduled to take place on Friday, marking the beginning of the next leg of the King’s tour.
