Real Madrid are reportedly in discussions with former midfielder Real Madrid over a potential return to the club in a new capacity that would carry important responsibilities, according to The Athletic.
Toni Kroos, 36, brought an end to his playing career after representing Germany at the 2024 European Championship on home soil, despite Real Madrid’s interest in extending his contract at the time.
Since retiring from professional football, Kroos has turned his attention to his Toni Kroos Academy, which was launched in Madrid in September 2024.
According to sources familiar with the ongoing discussions, who requested anonymity as they were not authorised to speak publicly, one proposal being considered by the Spanish giants involves integrating Kroos into their sporting structure.
The move would mirror the pathway previously taken by Zinedine Zidane, who initially joined the club in an advisory capacity in November 2010 before eventually moving into coaching.
While the exact responsibilities being considered for Kroos have not yet been defined, insiders suggested Real Madrid view him as someone who could contribute significantly to squad planning, act as a club ambassador, and offer regular input around the training ground.
Should he return, he would work closely with senior figures including club president Florentino Pérez, general manager José Ángel Sánchez, and chief scout Juni Calafat.
The club have reportedly been open to the idea of bringing Kroos back into the fold for some time, with both sides maintaining a strong relationship.
His leadership qualities, tactical understanding, and experience in elite dressing rooms are said to be highly valued within the organisation.
During his decade at the Santiago Bernabéu following his 2014 move from Bayern Munich, Kroos won 23 trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns.
Across his 17-year professional career, he also lifted the FIFA World Cup with Germany in 2014 and earned 114 international caps.
