Former Super Eagles forward, Gift Orban, is at risk of disciplinary action at Hellas Verona following an altercation involving a supporter shortly after their 1-0 loss to AC Milan on Sunday.
Reports from Corriere dello Sport, citing eyewitnesses, say the Nigerian striker was visibly upset after the final whistle.
He initially refused a request for a photo from a fan before tensions escalated further when another supporter allegedly struck Orban’s vehicle as he was leaving the stadium.
That act reportedly provoked Orban to exit his car, leading to a confrontation that quickly intensified.
The incident is said to have turned physical and was recorded on mobile phones by people present at the scene.
Italian authorities, including a specialist policing unit responsible for public order at sporting venues, have already begun examining the footage as part of an ongoing review.
Hellas Verona have since issued an official response distancing the club from what occurred.
“Hellas Verona FC, with reference to the incidents that took place after the Hellas Verona v Milan match in the parking area adjacent to the Bentegodi Stadium, involving player Gift Orban and a group of supporters, firmly dissociates itself from and condemns any form of violent conduct,” the club said.
“The club will continue to gather and assess relevant information.”
Orban, who arrived at Verona on loan from TSG Hoffenheim last summer with an option to make the move permanent, has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 28 league appearances so far this season.
Despite a recent dry spell of nine matches without a goal, he remains the club’s leading scorer.
Both the striker’s conduct and the actions of the fan involved are expected to be reviewed as investigations continue into the incident.
