LASEPA shuts religious centres, businesses over environmental violations in Lagos

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has sealed several establishments across Lagos for breaching environmental regulations, particularly those relating to noise and air pollution.

The enforcement operation, carried out on Wednesday, followed what the agency described as repeated violations despite prior warnings and inspections.

In a statement issued after the exercise, LASEPA said the affected locations spanned multiple parts of the state, including Oregun, Ikeja GRA, Agege Motor Road (Mangoro), Onipetesi Close, Meiran Road (Ile-Iwe Bus Stop), Akintunde Suberu Oje (off Casso), Ajasa Command, Ejigbo Road, and Fola Agoro in Shomolu.

The agency disclosed that the clampdown targeted a range of facilities such as religious centres, poultry farms operating within residential neighbourhoods, gas refilling plants, manufacturing companies, bakeries, media organisations, and hospitality outfits.

Among the sealed premises were Otuska Nigeria Nutraceutical Company, B.B. Market Place (poultry), Mountain of Fire Ministries, an Anglican Church, VoliaGas, Asian Limited, Pen-Shen Limited, Sunshine Bakery, Wise FM, Akanchawa Spot Bar, and Assemblies of God Church (Restoration Chapel).

LASEPA stated that the affected entities were found culpable of excessive noise emissions, air pollution, and failure to comply with required operational standards.

Speaking on the development, the General Manager of LASEPA, Babatunde Ajayi, said the enforcement action became necessary after repeated non-compliance by the operators.

“These closures followed a series of inspections and warnings issued to the affected establishments, which they failed to heed,” Ajayi said.

He stressed that noise pollution poses serious risks to public health and safety, warning that the agency would continue to take decisive action against defaulters.

“Noise pollution is not just a nuisance; it is a threat to residents’ well-being. We will not hesitate to sanction any organisation that disregards environmental laws,” he added.

Ajayi also urged business owners and operators of religious and commercial facilities to obtain the necessary environmental permits and implement effective noise control measures.

According to him, strict compliance with environmental regulations remains essential to maintaining a safe and healthy environment.
