Army buries Brig Gen Braimah, other soldiers killed in Borno attack

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday laid to rest Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and several other soldiers who lost their lives during a recent insurgent attack in Borno State.

The burial ceremony, held at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, was conducted with full military honours, reflecting the nation’s recognition of the soldiers’ sacrifice.

The deceased personnel were killed on April 9 when suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters carried out coordinated assaults on military positions in Benisheikh, a strategic community in Kaga Local Government Area along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.

In an official statement, the Army described the ceremony as solemn and deeply emotional.

“In a solemn and emotionally charged ceremony, the nation laid to rest Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” the statement read.

It added that the occasion was marked by “deep sorrow, honour, and reflection,” as family members, colleagues, and top government officials gathered to pay their last respects.

Among those present were Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, and other senior military officers.

The Army emphasised that the fallen soldiers were accorded full military rites in acknowledgement of their courage and service to the country.

“Their sacrifice is a poignant reminder of the heavy price paid daily by members of the Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation’s peace, unity, and security,” the statement added.

Prayers were offered for the deceased, while citations highlighting their service records were read in honour of their contributions.

The military also noted the profound grief of the bereaved families, stressing that their loss underscores the human cost of Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insurgency, even as the bravery of the fallen troops remains a source of national pride.
