DSS re-arraigns Ex-AGF Malami, son over alleged terrorism

The Department of State Services on Tuesday re-arraigned a former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, before the Federal High Court Abuja, over allegations bordering on terrorism and unlawful possession of firearms.

The defendants, who appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, were presented with an amended charge that replaced an earlier one. Prosecutors said the revision was necessary to properly frame the allegations before the court.

Counsel to the DSS informed the court that the amended charge had already been filed and urged that it be read to the defendants for fresh pleas. Defence counsel confirmed receipt of the new charge and raised no objection to the arraignment proceeding.

According to the amended charge, the prosecution alleged that in December 2025, the defendants were found in possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence, including a Sturm Magnum 17–0101 rifle, live cartridges, and spent rounds.

The DSS further alleged that the conduct amounted to preparation for acts of terrorism and criminal conspiracy under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

In court, the DSS legal team said: “We have filed an amended charge and request that it be read to the defendants for their pleas to be taken afresh.”

Both Malami and his son pleaded not guilty to all counts when the charges were read.

Following their plea, the prosecution requested a trial date while the defence urged the court to maintain the existing bail conditions granted earlier. The prosecution did not oppose the application.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that the defendants should remain on their existing bail terms, noting that they had complied with the conditions earlier set by the court.

She subsequently adjourned the matter till May 26 and June 15 for the commencement of trial proceedings.
