Germany legend, Oliver Kahn, has urged Manuel Neuer to seriously consider calling time on his career at the end of the current season, suggesting the Bayern Munich goalkeeper could bow out at the peak of his achievements.
Kahn, speaking in an interview with Sky Deutschland, praised Neuer’s enduring quality but stressed that managing physical strain and knowing the right moment to retire is vital, especially in the face of recurring injuries and the risk of decline.
He suggested that the timing could be ideal for the veteran shot-stopper to finish on a high with Bayern Munich, hinting that one final trophy-laden campaign might represent the perfect farewell.
“Isn’t this the perfect time to win every title with Bayern one last time and retire at the highest possible point?
“Do I really need another World Cup in the USA with temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius in the shade? Do I have to put myself through that? I think those are the thoughts he’s having right now.”
He added that another Champions League triumph could be the defining moment of Neuer’s career conclusion.
“If he wins the Champions League again with Bayern, it would be his third title. He’s already a world champion. Then it would be wise to say: ‘That’s it.’ That’s quite an art for an athlete.”
