The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that both terrorists and Nigerian soldiers lost their lives following a coordinated attack on a military formation in Borno State.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 9, 2026, when insurgents attempted to overrun the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh.
Onoja said the attackers struck at about 12:30 a.m., targeting the military base, but were met with strong resistance from troops under Operation HADIN KAI.
“Troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade came under a coordinated terrorist attack at their location in Benisheikh,” he said.
“However, they responded with exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower, forcing the insurgents to retreat in disarray.”
The military noted that the counterattack was led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, but did not confirm reports suggesting he was among those killed during the incident.
Despite repelling the assault, the Defence Headquarters acknowledged that some soldiers died in the exchange.
“Regrettably, a few of our brave and gallant personnel paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” Onoja stated.
“Their sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the defence of our nation will never be forgotten.”
He added that the Chief of Defence Staff had extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.
The DHQ described the attack as a sign that insurgents are under pressure following recent military offensives.
“This development reflects the desperation of terrorist elements who have suffered significant setbacks and now resort to futile attacks on well-defended positions,” Onoja said.
He also urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, particularly on social media, noting that misinformation could undermine ongoing operations.
Meanwhile, the military disclosed that clearance operations are ongoing in the area to track down fleeing insurgents and prevent them from regrouping.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute and committed to the fight against terrorism,” Onoja added. “Additional operations are underway to
