Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is set to go ahead with the planned coronation of newly elevated Ibadan high chiefs as beaded-crown Obas, despite indications that the affected traditional rulers may not attend the ceremony.
The event, scheduled to hold on Friday at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, will see the formal presentation of staff of office to three prominent figures: Sharafadeen Alli, alongside Akeem Adewoyin and Oyekola Babalola, following their elevation within the Ibadan traditional hierarchy.
However, emerging reports suggest that the coronation may proceed without the presence of the honourees, amid concerns over short notice and conflicting engagements.
A source familiar with the situation disclosed that the affected chiefs had communicated their inability to attend.
“One of them is currently abroad for medical reasons, another is engaged in national duties, and others are not in town. So, it raises the question of who exactly will be crowned,” the source said.
At the residence of Senator Alli in Ibadan, there were no visible signs of preparations for a coronation, further reinforcing speculation of a boycott.
Despite this, the state government insists the ceremony will proceed as planned. The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, maintained that all arrangements had been concluded.
“If the government did not intend to hold the event, it would not have made public announcements.
