DSS detains El-Rufai, bail ruling set for April 14

El-rufai sacks Kaduna House of Assembly clerk, three others

Operatives of the Department of State Services have taken former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, into custody shortly after proceedings at the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Wednesday.

El-Rufai, who is facing allegations of corruption, had just concluded a hearing on his bail application when security operatives escorted him out of the court premises and drove him away in a waiting vehicle. Sources indicated that he was likely transported to Abuja.

The presence of heavily armed DSS personnel around the court before the hearing had already raised concerns among observers about a possible arrest. Several security vehicles were reportedly stationed strategically within the vicinity ahead of the proceedings.

The former governor arrived at the court earlier in the morning under tight security, drawing attention from both law enforcement officers and onlookers.

Speaking to journalists after the session, lead defence counsel, Oluwole Iyamu, confirmed that the court has scheduled April 14 for its ruling on the bail application.

“The bail application has been fully argued, and the court has fixed April 14 for ruling,” Iyamu said. “We are optimistic and confident in the judicial process. We have presented our case and now await the court’s decision.”

He further disclosed that the legal team is also preparing for another case involving the DSS, which is slated for hearing on April 10 at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

“That matter is separate, and we are ready to proceed. All necessary filings have been made, and we will be present in court,” he added.

Wednesday’s development follows earlier proceedings that were briefly delayed due to a motion seeking the recusal of the presiding judge, which was later withdrawn.

El-Rufai is also facing a separate trial at the Kaduna State High Court alongside a co-defendant, over allegations including abuse of office, fraud, and the granting of undue advantage.

Security remained tight throughout the court session, with restricted movement around the premises and limited access granted to journalists.
