BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show host, Scott Mills, has been sacked by the broadcaster following allegations concerning his personal conduct.
The BBC has not provided further details, stating only, “while we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”
Mills, who took over the Radio 2 Breakfast Show from Zoe Ball in January 2025, ended his programme on Tuesday 24 March at 09:30 GMT, telling listeners, “Back tomorrow.” The following morning, DJ Gary Davies opened the show saying he was “in for Scott Mills.”
News of Mills’ departure was initially reported by the Mirror, and BBC News has reached out to him for comment.
In an email to staff on Monday morning, Lorna Clarke, director of music at the BBC, acknowledged the shock of the news, “I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock. Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV. I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity. Of course, it will also come as a shock to our audience and loyal breakfast show listeners too. I will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when I’m able to. While I appreciate many of you will have questions, I hope you can understand that I am not going to be saying anything further now.”
At the start of his Radio 2 show on midday, Jeremy Vine expressed his surprise: he said he was “taken aback by the story” and that he had “no further information” about it.
Mills, 53, has been a fixture on BBC radio and TV for over 25 years and ranks as the broadcaster’s 11th highest-paid star.
He joined Radio 2’s weekday schedule in 2022, replacing Steve Wright as host of the afternoon slot.
In 2025, he provided TV commentary on BBC One fIi-finals of Eurovision alongside Rylan and was last seen on television in a Traitors skit during Comic Relief.
Prior to his Radio 2 roles, Mills worked on Radio 1, which he joined in 1998, hosting the Official Chart between 2018 and 2022, succeeding Greg James.
He has also presented a weekend show on BBC Radio 5 Live and appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2014.
According to the latest annual report, Mills earned £355,000 – £359,999, representing his pay for his previous Radio 2 role and the first months on the Breakfast Show until April 2025.
His full salary for the Breakfast Show is expected to be higher and likely to be disclosed in the next BBC Annual Report.
Despite his departure, Mills remains the UK’s most listened-to breakfast host, with 6.5 million listeners in February, the highest figure since he took over in January 2025.
In 2024, Mills won BBC’s Celebrity Race Across The World alongside his now husband Sam Vaughan.
He described the experience as the “ultimate test of our relationship,” and the couple married shortly after filming.
Mills had been scheduled to present a new visualised podcast accompanying Race Across the World, titled Race Across the World: The Detour, which would feature comedians and celebrity fans as guests each week.
More episodes of Pop Top 10, co-hosted by Rylan and Mills, were also planned.
Mills has also made TV appearances in shows such as BBC Scotland drama River City and Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, along with a journalist role in BBC One drama Casualty.
He has competed on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Most Haunted, and Supermarket Sweep, and has served as a patron of the charity Neuroblastoma UK since 2021.
