Heavy raintorm rocks Osun community, Adeleke pledges support
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has extended his heartfelt condolences to residents of Osogbo and nearby communities following the destruction caused by a heavy rainstorm on Saturday night.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Malam Olawale Rasheed, the governor described the event as “sad and unfortunate.”
“On behalf of the government and good people of the state, I sincerely sympathise with victims of the heavy rainstorm that affected Osogbo and adjoining communities. I am deeply touched and concerned by the incident,” he said.
Adeleke assured that the state government, through the State Emergency Management Agency, would take all necessary steps to reduce the losses experienced by those affected. He also directed the Ministry of Works to clear affected roads promptly to restore smooth traffic flow.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the storm, which struck late Saturday, caused significant damage to homes and businesses across Osogbo, tearing off roofs under strong winds.
Electrical cables and streetlights were damaged around the Ogo-Oluwa and Olaiya areas.
A large billboard at Aregbe also collapsed, its iron bars hitting a soft drink distribution truck. On Sunday morning, NAN correspondents observed residents clearing debris and damaged rooftops from major roads, while Federal Road Safety Corps officers managed traffic around blocked areas.
Among the affected residents, Mr. Adeniyi Oluwafemi recounted the destruction of his property.
“When the rain started, we began to hear strong winds, and before we knew it, the roof of our house was blown off. All my electronics and bedding were drenched, and my documents soaked. I cannot yet ascertain the extent of the damage as I am still sorting through my belongings,” he said.
Mrs. Jumoke Oluwagbemiga also shared her ordeal, revealing the danger her family faced.
“We are lucky there was no electricity during the rain because my daughter ran into a live wire that had been cut from a pole. Only God saved us; we could have lost our daughter,” she said.
The storm’s impact extended to Oke-Baale, Sabo Ayetoro, and other parts of Osogbo, leaving residents counting their losses and beginning the arduous task of recovery.
