Oscars leave Holywood, relocate to new venue in Los Angeles

The Oscars are set to leave their longtime Hollywood home and relocate to a more central Los Angeles venue starting in 2029, coinciding with the telecast’s move to YouTube.

The Academy Awards will take place at the Peacock Theater, a larger venue than the current Dolby Theatre, which has hosted the Oscars since 2002. Located on Hollywood Boulevard and surrounded by the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Dolby Theatre (formerly the Kodak Theatre) has been synonymous with Oscar glamour for over two decades.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said the move is part of a multi-year partnership with AEG, the owner of the LA Live complex, which also hosts the Emmy and Grammy Awards.

“L.A. LIVE was built to host the moments that define culture, and there is no greater global stage than the Oscars,” said Todd Goldstein, AEG’s chief revenue officer.

Goldstein added that AEG is committed to crafting an environment “that celebrates creativity, honors excellence, and delivers an unforgettable experience for movie fans everywhere.”

The shift to the Peacock Theater, just eight miles (12km) from its current location, will take the ceremony away from the iconic Hollywood sign. Yet, it also represents a return to the Oscars’ earlier roots.

Prior to their Hollywood era, the awards were held at central Los Angeles venues like the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Shrine Auditorium.

“We are thrilled to partner with a global powerhouse like AEG,” said Bill Kramer, the academy’s CEO, and Lynette Howell Taylor, its president. “Their track record for building and operating technologically sophisticated live performance venues is unrivaled.”

The move comes amid a broader shake-up as the Oscars prepare to leave traditional broadcast TV.

After more than 50 years on ABC, the ceremony will be streamed live and free on YouTube starting in 2029.

For the centennial Oscars in 2028, the event will remain at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and be televised live on ABC.
